It had been broadcasting for longer than human civilization had existed, buried beneath three kilometers of blue-green ice at the bottom of a subsurface ocean no one knew was there. The frequency was impossible to fake. The origin was impossible to explain.

Command authorized the mission in 72 hours. No debate. No public announcement. Just a crew of six, a ship with enough fuel for one pass, and orders to retrieve whatever was down there — or not come back at all.

They found it. What it said, no one has declassified.

The Nereid II Faceplate carries that color back to Earth — the exact blue-green of an alien ocean floor.
